GOD'S FORSAKEN ARMY

"We are in Hell now Dear Lord
Please take us to Heaven
For there is no Glory here on Earth
In fields of mud still flowing red
From the fallen of this morning’s battle
Even the once yellow poppies of this field
Now from this bloodied land grow red"

GOD'S FORSAKEN ARMY

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done
in earth, as it is in heaven:
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil:
For thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.
Amen.

All my life dear Lord
I’ve prayed to you every day
With these words that I say
But Our Father, which art in heaven
Tell me now, please
Why have you forsaken us
Turned your back and walked away
From all of us, on either side in this war
Have we sinned against you so badly
That you leave us here, in this hell on earth

Hallowed be thy Name;
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done
In earth, as it is in heaven

But how can any of this be your will
Death, pain and destruction all around
The dead, the dying, the wounded
Swallowed by the mud in this hell on earth
Give us this day our daily bread
But let us live long enough to eat it
Why have you forsaken us Dear Lord
God’s  forsaken army

And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive them that trespass against us

Is that our sin dear Lord
Have we forgotten how to forgive
An eye for an eye, a life for a life
But how much longer can this go on
We’re running out of people to die

And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil

Come back to us Dear Lord

We are in Hell now Dear Lord
Please take us to Heaven
For there is no Glory here on Earth
In fields of mud still flowing red
From the fallen of this morning’s battle
Even the once yellow poppies of this field
Now from this bloodied land grow red

For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory
For ever and ever.

AMEN

NOTE "God's Forsaken Army" is part of the larger World War 1 story arc. This one is about a soldier after a battle in WW1 as he says his daily prayer but then starts to question line by line the words of it.  It could be for any soldier, any battle.
This is the 1622 version of this prayer – the later 1928 variant would be too late for this time setting
