Oh mortal flesh of man
How short your stay
No matter what the words you say
All your hopes and dreams
Your fears and your tears
Your passions and your lusts
Return so quickly to the dust
From whence in his name
All, no matter who you be, first came
All, in the end, blown like dead leaves
Upon the uncaring winds of time
It’s all our fates to be, yours and mine
Oh mortal flesh of man
Enjoy your laughter and songs
All the pleasure of your flesh
Whilst you still can
For no man can ever be the one to say
That today is not the day
When your mortal flesh will be taken away
Your now unbound spirit taken where
Who knows, not one of us can truly say
Only one man has ever returned
To light the path, show you the way
The one to whom you daily pray
Oh mortal flesh of man
Why are you always so quick to war
Do you so readily wish to stand
In judgement before heaven’s door
Your time of flesh here is never more
Before you feel death’s cold hand
Enjoy every moment that you still can
A loved one’s warm and gentle touch
Words, laughter, smiles that mean so much
All too soon if you only knew
Will be blown away, taken from you
Oh mortal flesh of man, my words are true
Oh mortal flesh of man
Dust was your beginning
Dust shall be your end
No matter how much you pretend
That you are master of your own destiny
Higher power has the final say
Of life or death over you today
All in vain your face to try and hide
From the one upon whom
Your mortal flesh fate will decide
Who can say, if it be for you today
That the drumbeat of war sounds no more

NOTE - This one for me is based on the sounds of an old medieval church chant. It does however fit into a wider WW1 story arc that is developing at the moment.
