I’ve been with you from the very start
As we both sat under that Blue Moon of Kentucky
And you held my hand telling me That’s All Right
As we waited for that Mystery Train
And I remember that night we met at Heartbreak Hotel
And you told me that I Was The One
Standing there in your Blue Suede Shoes
While playing on the juke-box was Milk Cow Blues
As I turned and looked at you and said
I Want you, I Need You, I Love You
While all the time barking outside was some old Hound Dog
All through the years I’ve only asked for one thing
For you to Love Me Tender
And never to get back from you
A letter marked Return To Sender
And when we both got married in that little church that day
There was truly Peace In The Valley
But later that night we sure did make that Jailhouse Rock
You know that I’ve always been Stuck On You
And every little thing that you say and do
You’ve never had to promise me Fame and Fortune
And all you have ever had to say to me
Was Are You Lonesome Tonight
And I would always just Surrender
And when my dear departed father died
You were right there by my side Crying In the Chapel
And after a day like that what else could I do to cheer myself up
But go home and read your old Love Letters
I’ve never doubted from you your Burning Love
And you have been Always On My Mind
We’ve never the two of use ever had even the slightest reason
To have Suspicious Minds
And on that day that you had to go away
You know that you broke my heart
But I always knew that you were never going Way Down
That the only way for you was up
As you whispered your final words to me
Softly As I Love You
And I know that choirs of angels now
Will be singing rock n roll, gospel and blues
And knowing you the way that I do
They will probably now
All be wearing their own Blue Suede Shoes

NOTE. "A Very Good Friend Of Mine" started of as a line from an Elvis song running through my head. I then had this image of two people who met to the sounds of Elvis and throughout their whole life, the songs of Elvis have been there as a soundtrack. Our couple have had a long and happy life together, but one of them is sadly now dying. This story was in part a bit of fun trying to tell their life in significant moments in Elvis songs starting from his very first to his very last recorded song.
As I revisited these words, I realised that there was a far bigger story opening up here...a real life love story set to the musical background of rock n roll and Elvis, and also the words of the songs. A far bigger story is taking shape now about our couple, but here the music is the background to their story and we hear it on the radio, on a juke box and as they sometimes sing snippets of their favourite songs going about their daily lives. This is a story of how the words and music influence them in subtle ways, but definitely never as an out of place singing and dancing piece of musical theatre.
