Crucified upon the cross of broken dreams
I look down from above
Upon the altar of doomed and forbidden love
Reminded of my recklessness and folly
Knowing now that nothing is ever as it first seems
I sacrificed everything that I know for you
You told me that was the least that I could do
To prove to you my love for you was true
I gave you my heart and my soul both open wide
In return, you thrust a spear into my side
Crucified upon the cross of broken dreams
I now realise that the truth was never in your eyes
Or that your heart was beating to a different rhythm
How could I ever perceive, ever start to believe
Your ability to lie, manipulate and deceive
I was your sacrifice upon the altar of doomed love
You were the high priestess at the church of all my desires
The mistress in this dark mansion of forbidden love
Manipulator of all my desires, betrayer of all my affections,
For you I built this cross of broken dreams, for you to hang me upon

NOTE. Doomed, dangerous and forbidden love can take so many different forms, and sometimes that attraction can be so strong that a person finds themself unable to resist the attraction even when they know that everything will end in disaster for them. That surrendering to forces outside of your control and the willingness to allow yourself like a moth drawn to the flame to be almost crucified upon a cross as eventual punishment for your actions is at the heart of this story. Of course, to some, there may also be Biblical overtones in these words.
